Introduction to the British Touring Car Championship

The British Touring Car Championship is one of the best-loved, most illustrious and famous motor racing championships in the world. Only Formula 1 and America’s NASCAR stock car series have longer histories – since its inception in 1958 it has attracted and captivated millions of fans around the world.

BTCC Key Rules and Regulations

Technical Overview

From the 2014 season onwards all cars are built to the same NGTC regulations. First introduced in 2011, these technical regulations are designed to dramatically reduce the design, build and running costs of the cars and engines. Only NGTC cars are now eligible to compete in the BTCC.

欧洲杯在线投注NGTC allows independent teams to compete on a level playing field against manufacturer-backed efforts by keeping costs down whilst at the same time rewarding precise engineering and all-important split-second strategy.

The foundation for NGTC is an emphasis on some common components – turbo, wastegate, intercoolers and ECU (engine control unit), six-speed sequential gearbox, subframe, brakes, dampers and suspension – which dramatically drives down costs for teams looking to compete in one of the world’s most attractive motor sport arenas.

Teams have the option of running either TOCA’s unbranded NGTC-spec engine or, whether privateer or full manufacturer-backed entries, developing their own powerplant to the regulations, as long as it is from the same ‘family’ as their chosen model of car – all are 300+bhp 2-litre turbo-charged engines.


欧洲杯在线投注Entry to the BTCC requires a TOCA BTCC Licence (TBL). There are 30 permanent TBLs available to teams, and allocations are prioritised as follows:

  • Existing teams that competed in at least 50 per cent of the 2013 BTCC season with NGTC machinery had automatic entry for the same number of cars in 2014, subject to fulfilment of the pre-registration requirements by 30 November
  • Existing teams with two or more NGTC cars received priority for one additional entry subject to validation of the entry by TOCA

Teams may sell, gift, lease, assign or loan their TBL to other existing teams or eligible new entries on a season-long basis only, subject to the approval of TOCA as to the integrity of both recipient and transaction.

Race Weekend Format

There are 10 events in the current season, with each event run across a weekend (Saturday and Sunday).

On Sunday there are three BTCC races

The points system is 20-17-15-13-11-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 for the top 15 finishers. This method of scoring is also be applied to independent drivers’ and teams’ championship and the overall teams’ – see full regs for details. Single bonus points are awarded for the fastest qualifier, fastest laps and leading laps during races.

Dunlop Tyres

All teams in the BTCC must use Dunlop SportMaxx tyres. There are two dry compounds as well as the SportMaxx BluResponse tyre for wet conditions.

  • The medium or standard tyre is used in two of the three races per event. Teams must nominate which race they will use the soft compound tyre in before qualifying on Saturday, but this information is not released until Sunday morning
  • Teams may only use the soft tyre in each of the three races three times during the course of the season – meaning they can only use it in race three at a maximum of three events, race two at three events etc.
  • If the team chooses to use the soft tyre in a race that turns out to be wet, they have to attempt to use the soft tyre in the day’s next race. The soft tyre allocation does not carry over across race meetings

Race Grids

  • The grid for race one is decided during Saturday’s qualifying session
  • The grid for race two is based on drivers’ fastest laps from race one
  • The grid for race three is based on finishing positions, however there is also a reversed-grid element to the starting order. Cars that finished from sixth to tenth position in race two are put into a bowl, and one number is drawn at random. The corresponding car will start on pole, with the cars that finished ahead of it reversed i.e. if number six is chosen, the car that finished sixth in race two will start from pole ahead of the car that finished fifth, fourth, third etc.

Success Ballast

Cars that are successful in the BTCC must carry ballast (additional weight) in their cars. Ballast is given to the top ten runners in the following allocations:

1st:75kg, 2nd:66kg 3rd:57kg, 4th:48kg, 5th:39kg, 6th:33kg, 7th:27kg, 8th:21kg, 9th:15kg, 10th:9kg

Between events, ballast is allocated according to championship positions and is carried in qualifying and race one. For races two and three, ballast is allocated according to the finishing positions in race one and two respectively.

    The nearest mainline train stations are Milton Keynes and Northampton. Please check connecting bus services in order to ensure you can connect to Silverstone at a convenient time. Alternatively taxi journey is a short ride to Silverstone from these stations. Approx 30mins.

    Taxis are readily available at all train stations just a short journey to Silverstone, approximately 30 mins. We advise fans to book return Taxis from Silverstone in advance.

  • Leaving the venue

    Yes, Silverstone merchandise shops sell these essential items! Please download the event map (closer to the event) to locate these shop locations.

  • Can i use my pushbike around the circuit?

    Yes, this is possible; please ensure the staff at the gate stamp your hand as you leave the circuit. Re-entry to the site will only be permitted if the person has their hand stamped and is in possession of a valid ticket for the event. Please review the timetable (closer to the event) to check last re-entry times each day.

  • can i take photos?

    Photographic equipment, mobile telephones and other communications devices are permitted within the venue provided that they are used for personal and private non-commercial purposes.

    We have a wide range of vendors around the circuit for all tastes. We have traditional hot snacks such as burgers, fish & chips, jacket potatoes and pies to paninis, baguettes and vegetarian food – but we’re sure you’ll find numerous other options that are very tempting indeed. There are also a number of licensed bars serving beer and other refreshments.

    Silverstone Circuits Ltd and the police have a zero tolerance policy to illegal substances. The dealing in or use of illegal drugs is not condoned by Silverstone Circuits Ltd. Drug enforcement laws are as applicable on site as anywhere else in the country. Police officers and security guards will be on site and will deal with drug offences in accordance with national guidelines. Neither anti-social nor illegal behaviour will be tolerated. You may be searched at the entrance. Any items which the organisers consider may be used in an illegal or offensive manner will be confiscated. Persons suspected of carrying out illegal and / or offensive activities onsite may be searched. If you do get caught you will be escorted off the site, and refused re-admission.
